With great sadness, we announce that Richard (Dick) Walz, 68, passed away on November 6th, 2022. Dick fought a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s disease and passed away peacefully at his Onalaska, WI home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Dick was born on October 4th, 1954, and was raised on a family farm in Glen Haven, WI. There, he developed a strong work ethic, learned the value of hard work, and began a lifelong passion for woodworking. Dick graduated from Western Technical College (1973) and started his own construction company. In 1982 he started his manufacturing journey at Cabinet Factory Inc. (later renamed WalzCraft) and became the majority owner in 1987. Dick had a passion for providing customers with high-quality products, and a variety of choices. He loved improving a process to give guaranteed results and talking at length with Team Members to make these improvements. Those close to Dick would describe him as an incredible man and a visionary leader who was dedicated to his family and his work at WalzCraft.

Dick was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 31 years, Jane Lynn Walz; his parents Gerald and Anna Marie Walz, and sister SuzAnne Taylor. He is survived by his son Bradley Walz (Britni), two stepsons Jess Dzurko (Ashley) and Ross Dzurko (Lindsey); and six siblings, Barbara Ekblad, Paul Walz, Larry (Joanne) Walz, Tim (Tracy) Walz, Mary Rae Walz, and Michael (Colleen) Walz. Along with five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

During Dick’s long ordeal with Alzheimer’s, his son Bradley was faithfully at his side. In 2020, Bradley became President of WalzCraft after working 16 years with the company, fulfilling Dick’s vision that WalzCraft remains a family-owned company that would continue for years to come.

Dick was dedicated to giving back to the community. He was recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of Western Technical College and a Market Leader in the Wood Industry. He was a proud father and grandfather that loved his family more than anything else. While he will be missed dearly, we will forever cherish the time we spent together.

To send an online condolence to the family or to view the service schedule, please visit www.blaschkeschneider.com. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Dick Walz to the La Crosse Boys and Girls Club.

Years – Celebration and Reflection

The year is 1982. The Commodore 64 home computer hits the market, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” comes to the big screen, Sony launches the compact disc player, and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album is released. That same year, in Brice Prairie, WI, Cabinet Factory Inc. (later renamed WalzCraft) was founded. From its humble beginnings with a handful of employees working in a small pole shed, the company has grown to 260 dedicated employees in a 360,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility. On May 12th, 2022 we reach a major milestone: our 40th Anniversary. In addition to celebrating where we are, we also take this opportunity to reflect on how we got here.

After incorporation, the 1980s saw strong growth for the young company. By 1989 we employed over 50 people and had moved twice to accommodate the expansion, ending up at our current location in La Crosse, WI. The 90s brought the addition of CNC routers, a 22-page color brochure, a company website, and more square footage totaling 176,000. In 2002 the company name changed to WalzCraft. That same decade brought multiple building additions, a flatline finishing system, more machinery, and the launch of the Signature Series doors. Since then, the Refacing Training Program began, Saw Stops appeared, and lean manufacturing efforts ramped up to increase production efficiencies.

We could not have become a nationally recognized leader in the industry without our dedicated team members, loyal customers, and valued suppliers. As we celebrate 40 years in business, we want to thank everyone that has contributed to this achievement. We look forward to seeing what the future holds, and appreciate all of you being a part of the journey.

According to the 2021 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, 76% of homeowners upgrade their vanities during a remodel or redesign. The majority of these homeowners choose custom or semi-custom cabinets with space-specific layouts and personalized storage solutions. Let us guide you through some of our recommended product options for Bathroom Vanities.

Small Space Solutions

All-white finishes continue to top the must-have lists of many homeowners, and a small bathroom is a perfect place to capitalize on this trend. Achieve this look by ordering prefinished products in our Classic White or Dove White SolidTone (Paint) options. This light color scheme helps encourage the illusion of space outside the vanity, but it doesn’t make what’s inside any bigger. Our Notched Pattern Drawer Boxes offer custom openings that work around plumbing obstructions and help maximize storage in small vanities.

Painted Furniture Look

This breezy blue vanity offers ample storage with furniture-style accents. The Cabinet Feet and Decorative Moldings add a custom touch to this clean transitional design. Order products prefinished in one of our 30+ SolidTone (Paint) Colors, Custom Colors, or Primed Only for Paint options. Our Primed Only for Paint finish is a great time-saving solution for busy finishing departments. Products will arrive with a quality primer base applied and require only a little prep (scuff) sanding before applying your painted top coat.

Customized Storage

Storage is a priority in any bathroom, and this custom vanity has tons of space to add custom storage solutions. Our favorite additions include Pullouts, Organizer inserts, and hutch-style cabinets with interior shelving and Crown Molding. This customer used our Beaded Face Frames with inset Doors & Drawers to hide all the storage. WalzCraft offers both Assembled and Ready to Assemble (RTA) Face Frames where your Inset Doors and Drawer Fronts are precision sized to fit all Face Frame openings.

Contemporary Design

The combination of rustic wood and distressing on this drawer-filled vanity adds instant warmth and charm to this bright bathroom. Quality dovetail drawers paired with drawer organizer inserts will help maintain a clutter-free environment. Unlike design themes and trendy finishes, the benefits of well-organized interior storage will never go out of style.

One of the most common homeowner requests when planning a new, remodeled, or refaced kitchen is to add or upgrade an island. WalzCraft not only has the Cabinet Doors, Drawer Fronts, and Drawer Boxes covered, we also offer a variety of functional and decorative enhancements that will help customize your kitchen island design. Below are seven examples of how to use WalzCraft Cabinet Components to create a custom Kitchen Island for your clients.

Transitional Two-Tone

Two-tone kitchen cabinets are a popular design trend, and the island is the ideal place to incorporate visual interest. Try pairing painted cabinets with stained wood cabinets to create a focal point, as well as add depth and texture. Don’t forget to order Outlet and Vent covers in matching wood and finish colors.

Customized Openings

Cabinet Valances are a great way to customize an opening between cabinets or hide countertop supports. Our Upper Cabinet Valances are available in a variety of patterns and your choice of outside edge profile. If you are using the opening for dining or a workstation, then consider adding shelf supports or decorative corbels for additional support.

Refaced Shaker Island

This Shaker Style Island received a facelift as part of a refacing project. After refacing the base of the island, this customer installed corner moldings to hide exposed panel edges. Next, they attached Onlay Frames to create the look of wainscoting. The addition of new Drawer Fronts and a custom Bread/Cutting Board complete this refaced island.

Rustic & Farmhouse Designs

Our non-catalog team will help customize a door or wainscot to create custom island end panels for easy installation. The example above features a custom X Pattern Cabinet Door with Mortise and Tenon construction. Our X pattern doors are available in a variety of Profile, Wood Species, and Finish options.

We would like to thank our customers for supplying us with the island installation images used in this article. Our made-to-order X Pattern Cabinet Doors provide an easy way to add charm to kitchens, bathrooms, and furniture. While this type of door is most common in Modern and Industrial Farmhouse design, it also complements Traditional, Shaker, and Transitional Design schemes.

Custom options for these Accent Doors include a wide array of profile combinations, wood species, and finishes. The addition of vertical or horizontal Center Panel Face Routing (CPFR) pairs well with Farmhouse or Rustic styles. We’ve added several Signature Series Designs with this popular X detail to help visualize the finished product. All samples have shaker style profiles with Mortise and Tenon Joinery and finish at 3/4″ or 1″ thick. We use full-thickness angled Center Stiles/Rails to create the X Pattern and cut triangular Center Panels to fit each opening. Click on the doors to view full product specifications.

X Pattern Cabinet Doors are not shown in the current WalzCraft Catalog but are available as a Custom Engineered Product. WalzCraft reviews all requests for these doors due to their complexity. Keep in mind that each product will have a unique look depending on the finished sizes.

Our made-to-order Pyramid Panel Cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts provide a creative way to infuse character into high-end kitchens and custom furniture. WalzCraft reviews all requests for Pyramid Panel Cabinet Door and Drawer Fronts due to their complexity. Keep in mind that each product will have a unique look depending on the finished size.

We’ve created four samples to show how the product size changes the shape of the center panels. As always, these custom accent doors are available in a wide array of Profile, Wood Species, and Finish Options. *Note: Pyramid or Envelope Style Panel Doors and Drawer Fronts are only available in Solid Wood at this time.*

Our S966 Lennox and S967 Reese samples feature a Style 10 Raised Pyramid Panel Door and “Look B” Raised Panel Drawer Front. The shaped panel in the door extends to the face of the door while the back of the panel remains flat. The raised panel drawer fronts are 3/4″ at the edge and 1 1/8″ thick overall.

Traditional shiplap is created by installing thin planks of wood with rabbet joinery. WalzCraft’s Shiplap “Look” Doors are a simplified version made to mimic the visual appearance of traditional shiplap. Instead of individual planks, we use Center Panel Face Routing applied horizontally to create this look.

Solid Wood Shiplap Style Panels

When looking for a natural or stained shiplap style door, we suggest pairing one of our simple Shaker, stepped, or beveled Stile and Rail profiles with our RVSCP PR324 Reversed Center Panel. The Reversed Center Panel will have horizontal gain and grooves to simulate the look of wood planks. The S951 Clinton, S958 Beckett, and S959 Kendrick samples showcase some of the recommended profile combinations, along with our CPFR 300 and CPFR 400 Center Panel Face Routs. When selecting a CPFR, you may also choose one of our standard spacing options or specify custom spacing.

Painted Shiplap “Look” Options

If you are looking for a painted Shiplap Style Door, we recommend using our Paint Grade Maple Wood Species with a Recessed or Flat MDF Center Panel. Our S960 Quinn Door is the perfect example of this combination and is finished in our Dove White SolidTone (Paint). Our horizontal CPFR options are a great way to add a little detail to the highly requested white shaker door and pair perfectly with Farmhouse Styling.

Oil sweep/oil reel marks Unintentional texture left in paint by an oil sweep or reel. possible reason – Painted with low quality/incorrect tools. – Poor workmanship (eg too fast or too much paint). – Repaint or reroll partially dried paint. – poor working or drying conditions (e.g. overheated substrate, high temperature) solution – Lightly sand affected area until smooth, repaint – Use consistent painting techniques (such as applying oil reel pressure evenly from top to bottom) while keeping the edges wet. – Make sure to use high quality and recommended tools and equipment. – Make sure the workmanship and drying conditions are in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. – In hot or windy conditions, the recommended amount of thinner can be added to improve workmanship.

chalk Powder on the surface of the paint film, produced by the degradation of the paint binder. possible reason – Use interior grade paint on surfaces exposed to UV radiation. – Surfaces where the painted surface has been fully exposed to strong sunlight for a prolonged period of time, and/or has an elevated salt concentration (eg coastal areas). – Use dark paint, which absorbs more heat and UV rays from sunlight than lighter colors. – Paint lighter than recommended thickness. solution – Wash the affected area, remove all surface contamination and powder, and repaint with a UV-resistant paint system. – Make sure to paint to the recommended coverage. – To minimise chalking, have a maintenance schedule in place from the outset to ensure that painted surfaces are cleaned and repainted within scheduled times.

weathering The salt migrates to the surface of the porous masonry substrate, forming a white scabbed deposit. possible reason – Excessive moisture in the substrate – Paint on under-cured substrates. solution – Use a stiff brush to remove deposits, then clean the surface with a mild white vinegar solution (acetic acid). In severe cases, a stronger acid solution should be used by an experienced contractor to remove mineral salts and then allowed to dry. – Identify and eliminate the source of moisture and repaint once the surface is intact, clean, dry and free of mold and algae. Alkali-resistant sealants and a suitable topcoat are recommended.

fade Excessive tarnishing of the paint coat. possible reason – Use interior grade paint on surfaces exposed to UV radiation. – The painted surface is exposed to high salinity (e.g. coastal areas). – Colors such as bright blue, yellow, red are particularly susceptible to UV radiation. – Add a colorant higher than the recommended coloring level. – The paint film used is lower than the recommended thickness. solution – Thoroughly clean the affected area, remove all surface contamination and repaint. – Use manufacturer-approved UV-resistant paint products and coating systems. – Make sure to paint to the recommended coverage. – To minimise fading, have a maintenance schedule in place from the outset to ensure that the painted surfaces are cleaned and repainted within the scheduled time.

foaming/foaming Air bubbles formed during application and pits created when air bubbles burst in the paint film. possible reason – Painting with improper tools (eg oil reel fuzz length, material type). – Poor workmanship (eg too fast or too much paint). – Over-mix the product before use. – Paint with old and/or improperly stored paint. solution – Make sure to use the correct application equipment and technology. If you notice excessive foaming in the can, allow the paint to settle before using. – Correct foam in dry paint film, lightly sand affected area to a smooth surface and repaint. In some instances, lather in the wet film can be corrected by light application with a brush.

wear and tear When the painted surface is worn or impacted, visible shiny spots or areas of polishing can appear. possible reason – Use low-gloss, matte and flat paint in heavy tones (dark or vivid), especially in high-traffic areas – Fang. – Frequent cleaning and/or spot cleaning, especially with abrasive cleaners or tools (wire balls). – Unintentional bumps on painted surfaces (eg furniture rubbing coatings). – Critical or low angle lighting may accentuate any worn look that has a chance. solution – Repaint with higher gloss or lighter color paint. – In some instances, a durable clear coat may be recommended.

mold Black, grey, brown spots on the painted surface. possible reason – Presence of moisture (condensation in the substrate, surface or high humidity). – Paint on moldy substrates. *TIP: Test for mold by putting a few drops of household bleach on the discolored area; if it disappears, it’s likely mold. solution – To get rid of mold, scrub the surface with a diluted household bleach solution (one part bleach, three parts water) while wearing rubber gloves and goggles. Rinse thoroughly. – To prevent mold, use paint with anti-mold properties.

crack Deep, irregular cracks in the dry paint film. possible reason – Applying too much paint causes the surface of the paint film to dry faster than the rest (most commonly where paint can overlap, such as corners). – Poor working or drying conditions (e.g. too cold substrate, too low temperature). solution – Sand the surface flat and repaint at the recommended coverage. – In some instances, oil-based primers or high-concentration products may be required. – Ensure application and drying conditions comply with manufacturer’s recommendations

patch Poor gloss or color uniformity, especially when looking flat from an angle. possible reason – Paint on surfaces with different textures and uneven porosity (joints between plasterboards). – Failure to properly prime the substrate. – Inconsistent workmanship – Bad working or drying conditions (eg high temperature, high temperature). solution – Before applying the topcoat, the new substrate should be treated to ensure uniform porosity of the substrate. – Use consistent painting techniques (such as applying oil reel pressure evenly from top to bottom) while keeping the edges wet. – Make sure the workmanship and drying conditions are in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Cracking and peeling The paint film forms a definite fracture, the local adhesion between the paint film and the substrate is lost, or the paint film is completely separated from the surface substrate. possible reason – Paint on unsound substrates (e.g. weathered wood, weak concrete or plaster) – Paint on soiled or loose materials. – Paint on overly smooth surfaces that are difficult to bond. – No precoat (primer) used, poor quality or the wrong type for the substrate. – Lack of maintenance of existing paint solution – Before starting any new paint, the extent and cause of the problem needs to be clearly identified, the cause removed, and the old paint stripped until the substrate is sound.

framing A matter of appearance, areas where you paint with an oil brush look brighter or darker than areas where you use an oil reel. possible reason – Apply wet paint on dry or semi-dry areas – Differences in gloss and/or surface texture due to different workmanship between oil brushes and oil reels. – Inadequate mixing of paint prior to application, resulting in poor toner incorporation. -Brushing may result in lower coverage than rolling, creating a thicker film, which can lead to differences in color/opacity. solution – Stir paint thoroughly before use. – Work on a smaller area of the room to keep the edges wet, and use the oil reel to overlap as much as possible over where the oil sweep is used.

Poor washability Dry paint does not resist dirt and stains possible reason – Use paint with poor stain resistance. – Paint at higher than recommended coverage. – Paint over unprimed substrate. solution – Use manufacturer-approved antifouling paint products. – Make sure the paint is applied to the appropriate primed substrate at the recommended coverage. Tip: The most common stains can be removed from the antifouling paint with a soft damp cloth. For stubborn stains, a damp cloth and household cleaner are recommended. Some stubborn stains that can penetrate paint coats will require repainting with a suitable antifouling primer and antifouling topcoat.

sagging The phenomenon that the paint film sags immediately after painting. possible reason – Too much paint on the surface. – The viscosity of the paint applied is too low. – poor working or drying conditions (e.g. cold substrate, too low temperature, too high humidity) solution – If paint is still damp, brush off immediately or reroll to redistribute excess paint evenly. – If the paint is dry, sand and reapply a fresh coat of paint at the recommended coverage. – Do not over thin the paint. – Ensure that the conditions of work and drying are in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Surfactant leaching Soapy, sticky, shiny spots or streaks on newly painted surfaces, usually within the first few weeks after painting. possible reason – Poor working or drying conditions (eg low temperature, high humidity, condensation, rain). – Add a colorant higher than the recommended coloring level. solution – On façades, the leaching of surfactants usually disappears within a short period of time without intervention. Rinsing with fresh water will help wash it off. – On interior walls, leaching of surfactants can be easily cleaned with a mild soap solution, soft cloth or sponge, then rinsed thoroughly with clean water. – Ensure that the conditions of work and drying are in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Tannin spots Brown or tan discoloration on painted surfaces, most commonly found in knots in some types of wood. possible reason – Use paints with poor antifouling properties. – Excessive moisture in the substrate. – Poor working or drying conditions (eg low temperature, high humidity, condensation, rain). solution – Identify and eliminate sources of moisture and reapply an antifouling primer or topcoat when the surface is well clean. – Ensure that the conditions of work and drying are in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Enamel turns yellow Evolution of yellow discoloration in alkyd enamels. possible reason – Lack of natural light (eg behind picture frames, inside closets and sliding cavity doors). – Presence of ammonia (commonly found in household paints and cleaners) during workmanship and maintenance. solution – Ensure good ventilation during work and maintenance. – Allow as much natural light as possible into the painted areas during and after work. – To minimize the “yellowing” effect during drying, all traditional water-based primers and topcoats should be applied first and allowed to cure for up to two weeks (longer if cold) before starting the enamel job, vice versa. – Use high-quality water-based paints instead of solvent-based paints.
